8 Tips For Sump Pump Use and Maintenance
- Check your sump pump by adding water to the pit until it cycles on at least twice a year. We recommend doing this in the early spring and late fall
- Regularly check the pit for mud, gravel or other debris that could clog the impeller. Remove any debris that could cause damage or block the float.
- Never operate an electric float switch by hand as is could be a shock hazard.
- Keep track of installation date. If its older than 7 years its a good idea to preventatively replace the unit before it fails and causes a flooded basement.
- Monitor unit and check valve for signs of rust or failing seals.
- Make sure your sump pump pit cover fits correctly to avoid foreign objects or small children from falling in.
- If you have a battery back up system make sure to top off the battery with distilled water every 6 months if you do not have a maintenance free battery
- Replace your battery on your back up system at approximately 3 years.
